Caring for Your Feet In Between Visits:

A Guide to Foot Health and Hygiene

Foot healthcare is an essential aspect of personal hygiene. Similar to teeth brushing, bathing and shaving, our feet need our care too.

  • Wash your feet daily, ensuring thorough drying especially between the toes.
  • Check for cracks, sores, or breaks in the skin.
  • Apply a foot cream containing urea to moisturise dry skin but avoid using cream between the toes and around the nail.
  • Keep nails at a comfortable length by regularly clipping and filing.
  • Maintain warmth.
  • Ensure shoes are well fitted and comfortable.

Footwear:

Choosing the Right Shoes for Healthy Feet

Well fitted shoes will provide support, comfort, and stability. When shoes are poorly fitted they can lead to problems such as calluses, corns, bunions, and ingrown toenails.

When selecting shoes, look for:

  • Breathable materials with seam-free linings.
  • A deep, roomy toe box to prevent pressure on toes and joints.
  • A cushioned, flexible rubber sole with good grip.
  • A low, broad heel (no higher than 3cm/1.5 inches).
  • Secure fastenings like laces, buckles, or Velcro straps.

Footwear to Avoid

  • Shoes that are too tight, loose, or have squashed backs.
  • Slip-on shoes or those with smooth leather/plastic soles.
  • Untied lace-up shoes or those missing laces.
  • High-heeled or backless shoes.
  • Wearing slippers all day—use them only for short periods.

Insoles, Socks & Slippers

  • Ensure insoles and splints are checked regularly by a Foot Health Practitioner.
  • Choose socks with natural fibres (wool for warmth, cotton for cooling). Avoid tight socks which restrict circulation.
  • Replace slippers often, and avoid loose or backless designs.

Next Steps

Evaluate your current foot care routine:

  • What are you already doing well?
  • What changes can improve foot health?
  • How will you implement these changes?
  • Who can provide guidance if needed?
Making small adjustments to your footwear choices can significantly enhance foot comfort and overall mobility.
